Mhairi McFarlane, the queen of romcoms

Updated: Sep 25, 2022

Why is Mhairi McFarlane our current favourite romance novel author?

  • It’s her heroines. They are so great. She writes authentic, witty, loyal women with depth and the ability to laugh at themselves as they figure out this thing called life. It’s hard not to love them (Laurie Watkinson anyone?)

  • The friendships! The kind where, whether you live apart or have them right by your side, it’s just total acceptance, love (tough love when required), & support with lots of wine and laughs, of course! And the female friendships share as much of the page as the romance. It’s very relatable and true of life, Mhairi understands that our friends are our first loves. There can’t be any argument there!

  • The too-good-to-be-true leading men (*Ahem* Finlay Hart). I mean, not a trace of that toxic masculinity that most rom-coms fall into, bringing that “distinctly male & primal” energy that puts us off right away. With Mhairi’s books, you just need two sensible & lovely individuals for that toe-tingling slow-burn.

Mhairi’s stories do follow the typical romantic tropes but we find she takes a more authentic approach, especially when compared to the popular rom-coms today. You get genuine, adult conversations where you really do get to know the two people, how they understand and come to love each other. It’s insightful, sweet, and difficult to put down. We cannot wait to read her latest, Mad About You!

*Stand out novels would be Just Last Night, Who’s That Girl?, Here’s Looking At You, and If I Never Met You.
