Why we enjoy Georgette Heyer's novels

Updated: Jul 15

Georgette Heyer's regency romances don't get the attention they deserve

REGENCY ROMANCE! Oldie but a goodie. Heyer’s novels are a light, refreshing read. Her characters are fresh, witty, and the stories have all the ingredients of a fluffy romance novel, often sprinkled with some kooky adventure. She was writing about the regency era in the 1960s so there is a wry awareness to the society the characters inhabit. It’s definitely not Jane Austen or the Brontë sisters, but Heyer has a lot of charm and light-hearted stories for a cosy read.

Probably an extremely unpopular opinion, but when the Bridgerton series released on Netflix, we may have wished that the series was based on Georgette Heyer’s novels instead.

Our favourite is Black Sheep! What’s not to like? A heroine like Abigail who is smart, witty, and an “old maid”, refusing to give in to social pressures is a delight to read! And the Black Sheep in question, Miles Calverleigh, who is unkempt and looks down on regency society which is very relatable, considering their so-called rules and morals. Put these two together and there’s a lot of fun banter and laughs.

Do you like Georgette Heyer’s novels? If yes, which is your favourite?
